Woman in Tech: Deanna

Biography

Hey everyone! My name is Deanna and I'm a rising high school junior. I first joined Girls Who Code in 7th grade at my middle school's club. I think that coding is a great skill to have because it can be applied to many different fields from biology to art. I personally like coding because I get to make my own projects about things that I'm interested in. I can make something to express my views and share it with others which is really cool.

Something I learned from another one of my teammates that I couldn't have learned on my own:

My teammates taught me that communication is key to making a good project and having a good time along the way.

Hopes for the Future

I hope to study computer science and film in college. I'd like to either be a film editor or do something with coding, but I'm not completely sure yet.

Advice for other young women skeptical about studying computer science:

Just try it. You might like it, you might not. If you don't try it, then you'll never know.

Joining that GWC club in 7th grade was not my idea and my dad forced me to attend. I was reluctant to go because I wanted to spend my friday afternoon playing with my friends instead of staying after school learning how to code. Over time, I slowly got more excited about coding when my programs began to work and I was able to make my own games. Now, I'm glad that I joined that GWC club because it turned out to be really fun and led me to join two more GWC summer campus programs where I learned more programming languages and can make even more complex projects.
